Chris’s Story

PinExt Chriss Story

My name is Chris Garrett and in October of 2009 I turned 29 years old in the worst shape of my life!  My wife (Tekoa) and I were overweight, tired, weak, and had little respect for our bodies.  We ate horribly, lived a sedentary lifestyle and had no intentions of changing that lifestyle. We were embarrassed by how we looked and never felt good about ourselves, but were too lazy to do anything about it.  With heart disease prominent in my family I knew I needed to do something.  I never got to meet one of my grandfathers because he died before I was born due to a heart attack.  I dealt with Sleep Apnea and Narcolepsy so on top of having no energy due to being out of shape and overweight… I was ALWAYS tired.  You could pretty much consider me a walking zombie.  I often had to take naps in my car during my breaks at work because I could not stay awake.

Some friends of ours kept posting on Facebook about their P90X journey.  It got me wondering, “What the heck is P90X??”  I started doing research on it and decided it was going to be a little too intense for my wife and I to start with first.  I wanted to start with something a little easier so I would be encouraged to keep going and not get scared after the first few days, so we chose the older, less intense program, Power 90!  Until that day I had no intention of getting healthy or to get in shape.  It was an impulse buy.  I surprised my wife and told her what I bought and her immediate thought was “Crap… we spent money on this… now we HAVE to do it!” LOL.  This by far was the best impulse purchase we have ever made!

By the end of the first week of Power 90 Tekoa had lost 7 pounds and I had lost 10 pounds and our energy and stamina increased dramatically!  This was the motivation we needed to keep pushing “PLAY” for the rest of the 90 days.  Power 90 gave us AMAZING results.  We started to incorporate Shakeology in our daily nutrition which further boosted our results and broke us out of a plateau!  In 100 days I lost 59 pounds (230# to 171#) and 28.5 inches and dropped my body fat percentage from 30.3% to 16.5%!  Tekoa lost 31 pounds and dropped her body fat percentage from 31% to 21.2%!

Losing all that weight cured my Sleep Apnea and Shakeology has helped me overcome my Narcolepsy with all the energy it gives me!  I no longer take any medication!  We have since completed round 1 of P90X and WOW… again… the results were AMAZING!  I am now 168 Pounds and I dropped my body fat percentage from 16.5% to 8%!!  Everyday I am amazed with my new fitness and strength capabilities.  I am more flexible and can do things I have never been able to do before.  My physique is something I never could have imagined.  It is hard to imagine that just in a mere 6 months of commitment I was able to go from obese to ripped.  It is simply incredible!

As friends, family and coworkers saw how drastically we were transforming our lives, we began sharing Beachbody, Power 90, P90X, and Shakeology. Our passion for helping others achieve similar success was ignited and Tekoa and I signed up as Coaches – and we’ve never looked back!  The Coach opportunity is not about the money for us – it’s about the ability to do something we enjoy and most of all, the chance to guide others to a healthy lifestyle and provide inspiration and motivation along the way. The money is just an added bonus!

I am now 30 years old and am in the BEST shape of my life!  I first want to say “Thank You” to my beautiful wife for encouraging me and holding me accountable and for our 1 year old daughter who has been very patient with me as I work out in her play area! LOL.  I also want to thank my Beachbody Coach (Wayne) for being a huge inspiration to me to know what is truly possible with Team Beachbody and everything they offer.  I strive for his amazing success with his fitness, nutrition and coaching!

Get on board with us by making one of us your coach!   It can be difficult and I am here to support and encourage anybody that needs help through their challenging experiences of lifestyle change!  Tekoa and I worked as a team together to have success in Power 90 and P90X by holding each other accountable and and motivating each other.  We love sharing that with others now and we have great joy in helping others have the same success as we have with these Beachbody programs.  Always remember “Do your best and forget the rest”!

First off I want to say awesome work you two!!! My wife and I are going to be buying P90x here soon as soon as we get some extra cash. But my question is we just had our second baby and I saw that your wife was breast feeding which my wife is as well. How did that affect her working out and the nutrition plan for P90 or P90X? Second question, did you guys workout in the morning or at night? Workout together or sepearte? Thanks for the help.

  2. Coach Chris says:

    Hey Jordan!
Thank you! Yes Tekoa was breastfeeding during Power 90, but was finished by the time we started P90X. It did not affect her workouts, but she did have to make sure she was eating enough. Breastfeeding burns additional calories (about 300-400 calories per day for Tekoa). That will be something to keep in mind when following the nutrition. if she starts “bonking” during the workouts or her milk production starts decreasing, then it may mean she needs to add more calories. I would have her check with her doctor about what she wants to do and ask how many calories would be ideal for her.

We worked out in the early mornings for Power 90. We always tried to work out together, but occasionally were not able to for different reasons. For P90X we have found ourselves working out a bit more at night after our daughter goes to bed, but we prefer to do the workouts in the morning to get them done so we don’t have to worry about it for the rest of the day.

Do you have a coach yet for when you start P90X?

  3. Jordan says:

Thank you for the information, those were a couple things that my wife was worried about. No we don’t have a coach yet. Just reading all the articles on all the coachs websites until we can afford to purchase P90X. Did you guys get two sets of workout equipment for P90 and P90X? Or did you let one of you use the pull-up bar then the other one?

  4. Coach Chris says:

We both have our own set of dumbbells and yoga mats. We started P90X with one pull-up bar and took turns on doing the routines, but ended up getting a second one so we can do them at the same time to save some time on the workouts since we like to work out together. Power 90 only needs dumbbells or resistance bands and P90X needs dumbbells or resistance bands, a pull-up bar (or resistance band attachment to put in doorway), a yoga mat and recommended (but not necessary) push-up stands or Power Stands and Heart Rate Monitor. We personally don’t currently use heart rate monitors because the ones we bought from Wal-Mart for really cheap are junk. We bought our yoga mats and one of our pull-up bars from Wal-Mart and bought our dumbbells from Dick’s Sporting Goods. I bought the Bowflex SelectTech 552 adjustable dumbbell set and Tekoa bought a few different sized dumbbell pairs (5, 8, and 10 pounds). On workouts where she needs additional weights she uses my dumbbells. We will probably buy a 15 pound set for her to use now. A cheaper option for a combo set of dumbbells is the Lifesmart Adjustable Dumbbells for $280 (versus the $399 for the Bowflex ones)

  5. Jordan says:

One more question for you. I see that there are two different versions of P90, which one did you guys use?

  6. John Barlow says:

Wow, i’ve seen your transformation on teamRIPPED and i just wanted to come and show u support. Great Job!!!

  7. Manny says:

Hey, great job, just one question did you do the Power 90 or Power 90 Master series?
Or a hybrid of the two? I am a mirror image of Chris’s Power 90 day 0 look and stats, just wondering where to buy this program and what i need i.e. dumbbells, pull up bar or anything else

    Thanks

  8. Coach Chris says:

Hi Manny! I did the Power 90 in Home Boot Camp found here… http://dream-2-reality.com/programs/power-90/power-90-in-home-boot-camp/

You can buy it right here and it will make me your coach! You will need dumbbells or resistance bands (the program does come with one resistance band) and I do recommend a yoga mat. You can find them cheaper at Wal-Mart than they are here from Beachbody.

  9. Stas says:

    Hi.

I just learnt about P90 and P90X after trying a bunch of home fitness systems and devices, and realy excited to find something that seems to be really working.

Do you care answering following 2 questions about P90, as I’m arranginge my to-buy list?

    1) Should I buy reistance bands or dumbbells? What is better for someone needing sheed some extra pounds fast?

    2) What yoga mat thickness should I pick-up, as I planning to contiue over to P90X?

    Thanks in advance!

  10. Coach Chris says:

    Hi Stas,

I personally like dumbbells better but either one will be fine. Dumbbells are a little better in building muscle and you have more control on the resistance levels you are working with. The Power 90 program does come with one resistance band.

Our Yoga mats are about 1/2 inch thick. I wouldn’t go any thicker than that.

  11. phil says:

    hi.

i am 100% purchasing this program! i am 30years old and 254lbs. i was an athelete in high school but have fallen into a slump as of the last 4 years. i will only able to workout in the mornings because of my busy schedule and will only have ~60min at best. my question is, would you eat before this workout (powerbar, protien shake, eggs?) or did you do it on an empty stomach? HELP :)

  12. Coach Chris says:

Hi Phil! If you are anything like me it will be the best decision of your life to start this journey :) During Power 90 I did not eat anything prior to my workouts in the morning. As I progressed I started to need something light. sometimes I would do a half banana prior to working out… or a little oatmeal.

  13. Gary says:

This is awesome. Your transformation is awesome. I first started with insanity in April of 2010 weighing 300lbs and let me tell you it was hell to do those workouts but I stuck with it and dropped 65lbs by mth 2. After all of that I relapsed and put back on 45 lbs. I was depressed at what I had done to myself once again so I decided to do some more research in order to prepare myself mentally and have since started p90x as of 3 weeks ago and have never felt better. I now know this is a life long commitment and not just some quick fix fad and looking at your site and seeing your transformation has given me that extra motivation to stick with it. On a side note, anyone I come across looking for extra information on p90x or just generally curious as to what beachbody is all about I will be directing them to this site.

  14. Coach Chris says:

Congrats on making the commitment Gary! You are right… this is an overall lifestyle change! You know what you need to do since you have done it before, but it is all about sticking with it. If you need anything please let me know… I am here for your success! Also thank you for your referrals… I appreciate it! :)

  15. Brent says:

Hey Chris how are you? Nice work Im going to use you as my motivation. My question is what diet did you use for power 90

  16. Coach Chris says:

Thanks man! I followed the Power 90 nutrition plan exactly to start with and only chose carb-heavy item per day and had it for breakfast or lunch. I ended up needing to increase my calories a bit which you can see what a sample day looked like for me when I was eating 1500 calories in my coach’s tips section under “Nutrition”. What are your goals with the program?
